News: JBL Charge 2 firmwareupdate 1.4.1 - do it yourself

Thanks to this great community here, some anonymous contributor has published a way how to update the JBL Charge 2 on your own. The necessary firmware file was already posted by someone else some time ago, but so far there was no way how to perform the update without the right software. As many still seem to fight with JBL-support who is taking their customers for fools  claiming that there is no firmware update available for the JBL Charge 2 I think we have to thank our unknown hero for posting this. He provided an archive including the 1.4.1 firmware-file, an installation manual and the CSR BlueSuiteNow.
Of course I cannot provide any warranty that you will not brick your device, but acoording to many owners they were able to successfully update his Charge 2 from 1.3.8 to 1.4.1:

Here are some alternate download-links:

Please let us know if your update was successful!

WARNING: Some already managed to brick their speakers, so apply on your own risk!

  1. Thanks Oluv for this information. I have tried this and it has worked successfully. Thanks to you and the person who has given this information. Though I have not tested playing the speaker after the upgrade but it says 1 4 1 as the firmware version. Thanks again

  2. Your post has come just in time for me. I was about to return my Charge 2. So the process to upgrade is pretty much what has been mentioned in the attachment. I however chose the first option in Step 7 because of me the other options were dead. I went ahead with the first one and that too worked.

  3. Just upgraded my JBL Charge 2 from Firmware 1.4.0 to 1.4.1.
It's as simple as it's amazing.

You guys rock, thank you so much!

  4. I too was able to upgrade 1.4.0 to 1.4.1 on my Charge 2. Took 5 minutes. Also went with the first option in Step 7 since the others were greyed out.

By the way, the JBL support didn't tell me that there is no firmware update available, but they said that it could only be performed at a service centre and, since there are none in my country, advised me to go to an adjacent one for this procedure.

  11. Hi o luv,
did you hear already about the Trendwoo Beatit and Music Tube Speakers?
A guy at www.miniklangwunder.de/?p=244 has tested it and summed up that he sold the charge2 and denon envaya mini because of the good Sound of the Beatit! ??? ohohoh.....
also check the Amazon Review of this guy: http://www.amazon.de/review/R2FPISOHO5A05B/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00TI741RO&channel=detail-glance&nodeID=562066&store=ce-de

Can this be true? Sounds a bit curious to me!
What do you think? As i'm currently waiting for the envaya mini till it is available again!
    thanks

  14. After reading about the firmware update I ordered both the Charge 2 (amazon.es had a good offer) and the Envaya Mini. First, I updated the Charge 2 - thank you so much for the firmware-update package! What can I say, it is pretty hard to decide which one sounds better, depending on the music one or the other takes the lead. In the end I let the price tag decide and went for the Charge. I was hoping for the Riva S to arrive, but couldn't wait any longer. A comparison between the Charge 2 and the Riva S will be interesting.

  15. Hi Guys,

I tried to update my device from 1.3.8 firmware to 1.4.1 and got stuck. Update has failed and now device wont boot up. Only power button lights, but nothing happens.

Can you explain how to erase speaker memory and perform clean upgrade? I cant choose anything but option 1 from manual step 7.

Can you send me a fresh backup of working firmware?

    Cheers,
    Lukasz

Did you find out how to reset?
I also tried with CSR 2.6 suite, And DfuWizard version 2.6.0. 450, didn't work.
Is there any button combination to reset speaker?

      regards Davor

  16. Very easy to upgrade. The text in the screen shots is in Chinese or Japanese. Just follow the pictures. What you need to click is highlighted in red. One difference is that the directions said to "not save the current firmware", but my PC would not allow that option, and instead saved it, which is the smart way to go anyway. The software take a bit of time to install in your PC, so be patient

  19. Thanks for this, bought the charge 2 after 2 friends had the charge 1, and I read your review of charge 2, and bought it 3 days before officially released at a store....

Never had distortion problems, but the sound overall is better after going from 1.3.8 to 1.4.1.

Thanks again! I love how thorough your reviews are!

  20. Hi bro can you help with this upgrade, I just got the jbl charge 2 last week and I noticed that the distortion sound does exist as when I checked it's a1.4.0, so as per your link I tried to upgrade by connecting to my PC, and I follow the guide but in the middle of the process, I get stuck where in it says "not save the current firmware", but my PC would not allow that option, and instead saved it" and so when I do it I don't get any options to click on 2nd option as it's on the guide it does not allow on the system so I click on the first option and then I get stuck as the next step asks to select a file? can you please help with this?

    1. did my upgrade yesterday!
First you have to select the Folder on your pc where you want to save the old Firmware as a backup.
Then, in the next step you have to select the new Firmware (which Comes with the zip file) and then click next!
      Upgrade worked for me :-)
      Thank you guys!

    3. Hi James, i will try to explain it and hopefully you can update your Charge 2 then!:

You downloadet the zip file which contains 3 files (update Manual, update Software and new Firmware 1.4.1)

After installing use the upgrade wizard as written in the Manual until you come to the step where you have to select the Firmware:
      1. 3 Options available - only the top one works: "Download a new Firmware, saving a copy of the current Version first"
      2. klick next
      3. a window Pops up where you have to select the new firmwar 1.4.1 (which you downloaded in the zip file!)
      4. in this poped up window navigate to the new Firmware file 1.4.1 and click "next or select"
      5. the window Closes and you are in the upgrade wizard Programm where you click "next"
      6. now you should be in the "ready to upgrade" step - now click "next" again
      7. now the upgrade should be in process until it is finished - just wait and relax ;-)
      8. klick next or Close the Programm
Optional - check the firmwar Version on your device:
      1. disable Bluetooth on your mobile phone or tablet etc.
      2. turn on the Charge 2
      3. press and hold "Bluetooth" and "Vol+" until ist says one-four-one
      4. be happy and Play Music!

      hope that helps
      cheers Michael

    5. Try harman kardon onyx studio, much louder, better and cheaper than jbl c2+, only if your willing to sacrifice portability and long battery life, and of course it has no warranty. Its only 108USD (4,999Php) in the Lazada Phil. The onyx even beat jbl xtreme, if your preference is for home use only.

  28. If anyone has trouble seeing the Charge 2 in Device Manager try using the cord that came with the Charge.
I suffered for a while and was getting ready to give up, used the OEM cord and it showed up instantly.
I may still send this back to see if there's something wrong with it, on a track like Times Like These by Foo Fighters there is a clamping or limiting effect that is unbearable. It sounds like the amp is drained after every bass drum or bass guitar note. As if the bass is turned too loud for the unit to handle.
As far as I know the Charge 2 has no tone controls or presets, changing the EQ on my iphone just for when I listen to the Charge is a step that shouldn't be required.
Audible on Am I Wrong by Nico & Vinz also, bass drum kills the output directly after it.
Will update if JBL can repair.

  29. Thank you! For all the reviews (I've watched soooo many O Luv videos my eyes are watering). I finally settled on the Charge 2 and upgraded the firmware without incident. Initially, I called JBL customer service to see if I could have the firmware upgraded at a service center because apparently some people had success with that. I was not one of them. I talked to someone who who said he was in the Northridge, CA office and that there was no firmware ugrade. He put me on hold supposedly to check into it, left me on hold, and eventually dropped my call. Never called back even though they took my name and phone number. Awesome customer service! Luckily you lovely people are here and I didn't brick my speaker. :-) Cheers.

    1. It's not country specific and it should work for any Charge 2 device. I have no idea where the 1.4.1 firmware file (.dfu) came from, though. And the .doc file has what I think are Chinese characters on the graphics. Regardless, the upgrade worked as my brand new Charge 2 came with 1.4.0 installed and now when I hold down the "Bluetooth" and "volume plus" buttons, the female voice says "1.4.1"

    1. I downloaded the 7z file from the second link above. Then I used a 7z file un-zipper to extract the three files. First install the CSR BlueSuite software and follow the instructions in the .doc. The firmware is the .dfu file. I too had trouble getting my laptop to recognize the Charge 2 while it was attached. I figured it was because the laptop was running Windows 7, 64 bit. I then tried it on a laptop running Windows 10, 32 bit and the process worked.

  52. Hey! Thanks for your post, gave me some nice info to get started on my charge2+
Just managed to use dfu-util under linux (debian jessie) to download (dfu-util -U filename) the 1.4.8 firmware from my charge 2+. At least I hope, didn't have the guts to flash it back yet :p (size is 1.2M, start and end of the file looks complete when comparing it to the 1.4.1 download linked to above) Tried dfu-programmer as well, but I'm not sure what kind of chip is in the device, needs some more time to figure that one out. Anyway, for those that 'bricked' their device, maybe someone handy linux-friend could try to fix your charge2 (non-plus) with this software as well. As long as you can get back in DFU-mode I suspect nothing is lost, based on what I've read so far.

The main CPU board named BM150 with chip CSR C57E687C (BlueCore5). Looked datasheets for BlueCore5 Ext MM. To recover through UART it won't work if the device bricked. To program, flashing and debuging possible only via the SPI interface. For this purpose CSR USB-SPI or CSR LTP-SPI is required and need solder contacts directly to board. I debricked my JBL and it's now working perfectly.
I write here my email and many spamm got.

    3. For debricking after an unsuccessful flashing, have skills in soldering smd elements. Pins small-sized and possible to damage pins and finally to break JBL. Accuracy is required. The CSR USP-SPI adapter is required (for example http://www.ebay.com/itm/CSR-USB-SPI-ISP-Bluetooth-USB-SPI-Download-Module-Chip-Programmer-Debugger-/291552669118?hash=item43e1e4adbe) or use this LPT-SPI http://byron76.blogspot.com/2011/09/upgrade-your-bluetooth-module.html
      In JBL Charge 2, BC5 M chip
Teardown JBL Charge 2: Remove side covers of passive radiators, for this accurately remove a rubber panel with buttons (enough to unhitch it on edges) latches which don't allow to turn side covers are visible. To hook a latch and to turn a cover. Teardown process in this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IElTLOlAGMo.
Solder to pins direct on board. Pins very small. Wires with thin core need. Solder to contacts of the BC5M (27 - SPI_CSB, 28 - SPI-MISO, 29 - SPI_CLK, 30 - SPI_MOSI). Connect JBL to USB that a supply on BC5M.
For unpacking .dfu use utilities (DfuUnbuild.exe) from CSR BlueSuite. Befor flashing dump you .psr (PStool.exe) and firmware from (BlueFlash.exe).
If you can't do this sell me your JBL.
Who needs a firmware dump .dfu or .fs/.xdv/.xpv format or datasheets, write here then I make a link.

    4. isn't it possible without CSR USP adapter or the one which is given in byron's website. how much will you pay for it if i wanna sell?

      Delete
    5. If your JBL doesn't enter the DFU mode that to debrick it possible only via the SPI interface. I pay 50-70$ for bricked JBL Charge 2/Charge 2 +. Depending on a condition.

    6. 50-70$ !! LOL..I guess i should try to repair it first..or will make tweeters of the speakers fitted in it.

  68. I updated JBL Charge 2 from 1.4.0 to 1.4.1 on my Windows 8.1 64 bit. Done in 3 minutes and forcing me to use the 1st option in step 7. I think the key to this is a stable connection, unless the download mentioned in the software is just downloading to the machine. Then in that case, I think best to use the least faulty usb port of your machine. Great community guys, thanks for the software!

Followed the instructions in the document included in the zip file exactly.

    Little tricks that helped me.

    - When holding Phone and Vol- to enter DFU mode. When all the lights come on keep holding the buttons down until everything goes off. It looks like the device is switched off but it is actually in DFU mode and should now be visible in windows device manager. If it does not appear in device manager you need to try a different cable. I could only get it to connect with the second cable I tried.

  84. Upgraded successfully from 1.3.2 to 1.4.1.
What I noticed: Upgrading from a virtual Windows machine does not work. As soon as a Charge2 in DFU mode is connected to a Macintosh it quits DFU mode. It has to be a real Windows machine. Wait for Windows to install the DFU-mode driver for the Charge2 before starting the actual firmware upgrade.

  85. If you follow the steps and use the files supplied here, is there still a real risk of bricking your JBL charge 2? I mean it sounds like this is happening due to USB cables being removed at the wrong moment, or trying to reflash the unit. I can get a charge 2 for a good price but I know I will need to upgrade it to 1.4.1. I just want a good idea of any risks that are out of my control when attempting the upgrade.

The first time I tired flashing my computer froze mid-flash so I would think most "bricks" can be re-flashed? As long as the unit turns on.

  97. I bought my JBL Charge 2 in the US but I live in Mexico and I thought that noise was "normal". When I read the article above I could confirm that the version of my speaker's firmware was 1.3.8 and I was not able to find any JBL service center in Mexico nor a phone number to get support. I tried the procedure with one of the links you provided: http://my-files.ru/d58uuf.JBL_CHARGE_2.7z and it worked great. The manual included showed some symbols from another language but the actual version of the software was completely in English. Now I confirmed that I have the 1.4.1 version of the firmware and the noise has gone. Thank you so much to you and the anonymous contributor who provided the software. Ricardo M.

  101. Hi, everyone! Want to share my experience for ONES WHO BRICKED their jbl charge 2!
Loved that device to the bone, but as many of you I've craved a firmware update, due to some small issues with a sound.
So...I've bricked my device while trying to update from 1.3.x version to 1.4.1 following the instructions posted here.
After entering the DFU mode (leds lighted on for a second and went off) nothing happened.
My WIN7 ("cracked version") with the use any of usb ports and cables refused to detect the device (showed "unknown device").
After unsuccessfull multiple attempts to bring it back to life I decided to buy a couple of flip 3s (planned such upgrade only after charge 2 will break), but some feeling stopped me right at the shop...
Finally, I've turned on my old acer 10-inch netbook with win-xp, which I haven't used for a year, and connected charge 2 with its standard USB-micUSB cable. Device was detected as "CSR Bluecore in DFU mode" and I'd conducted the update according to manual.
Everything worked fine and I'm happy now!
For those who had bricked the device (no respond and led-lights at all): don't be frustrated. Try to set everything on Win-XP. I think some win7 and older versions, especially "pirate" ones, are not capable to detect devices in DFU mode.
Wish luck to ones who bricked in a process of unbricking! Thanks to Oluv and "that russian guy" for giving an update!!!
P.S. Sound really has changed. It became more "flat" (for me is a plus) while saving its deep bass. Now its more stable when listening to a bassy music (mids are not lowering so much as before)
